Birthdays

Birthday

Not as stress free or as exciting as they have been made out over the years.

First of all there’s the party. Everyone has to have a birthday party! Great fun, providing they go smoothly, no-one gets in a fight, no-one goes home crying and we don’t end up in hospital. However, these incidents do usually provide the most memorable and best birthday anecdotes later on.

So, we start by planning the party, and you’d think in this modern day in age all of our wonderful techno gadgets would do this for us, but not yet. (may go check the Appstore before publishing, this could become a very different article!)

The organisational nightmare begins; when will all of your friend be free? Who’s coming to visit? How many people can you fit in the house? What theme will be people actually make any effort with? Then there’s the awkward business with invites, who do we really know well enough to have at our birthday party?

Then there’s presents - to write a list, or not to write a list? Writing a list could come across as greedy, but people hate buying gifts that you don’t like or won’t ever use.

Luckily this neurosis only entered my mind, long after planning out my Birthday. Besides I’ve had 19 birthday parties before, how will this one be any different? (Despite the fact, I just forgot how old I was)

If you’re trying too hard to have fun, chances are, you’re not having any fun at all.

January Blues

Today is long, and boring and cold - Suffering with the January Blues (or just being a lazy student, who knows?!)

I found three tips online for “fighting” said January Blues, which I think are more than a tad ridiculous:

1: Lie flat on the floor with your legs raised.

Erm, Why? No doubt the Mail Online has researched the health benefits of this ridiculous pose/exercise, but does lying on the floor really “open up your energy channels”

2: Plan A Holiday

I’m not sure I know anyone with enough money to plan a holiday because IT’S JANUARY. We all maxxed out on Christmas presents, christmas meals and christmas drinks - everyone is poor. Altought a holiday is a lovely prospect, the credit card bill and impending debt is not. Nice try, but still not solving my january blues.

3: Ask Yourself What’s Making You Feel Down In The Dumps

By far the most sensible suggestion, however I don’t really want to dwell on the fact, it’s cold, I’m poor and it’s not christmas anymore.

I think the best thing about that article was the ridiculous “Lie on the floor with your legs in air” method, I didn’t try it, but the thought did make me laugh. So at least the article went some way in cheering me up, and gave me something to write about!

Jan 18th

So it’s only January 18th - 18 days into 2012. And numerous times I’ve already wished this year away in a matter of seconds, as if 2013 is a certain thing. So 2013, hold many events to look forward to, but shouldn’t we all be living in the moment?

Because sometime in every’s lives, you’ll have a day when you realise nothing is set in stone, no matter how young, free, healthy we all are. It only take one pice of news, like the Big “C” word and all you think about is death.

By the Big C, I mean cancer of course, not the popular expletive. So from today I’m going to try harder (as always) to be a girl of the moment.

No matter what it says in your diary, for tomorrow, next week, next month or even next year - just take time to sit down and take stock for today.
